Green Houses

Post by Solar98632 » Sat Mar 07, 2015 12:07 am

Ah how the word of "greenhouse" brings forth of nightmares and climate disasters. .. Hey wait a minute. .it's not about that at all..

A Greenhouse can be a simple or very complex structure.
they can be a life saver by allowing you to grow foods in the winter. .Yes Troy even in you Hellish Winters...I might suggest a stronger one though and not that one you got. even the large one I have might succumb to a windstorm.

There are all kinds of Greenhouse units..You have the porta pop ups which are like tents and then you have ones that are slap it together sort of a cross between tent and well..not permanent. . (in other words, a high wind could send it sailing in to parts unknown.

then you have the permanent structure. which can be 10x12 on up.
usually these can withstand what ever nature throws at them.

and an example of a small but sturdy pop up green house.
Both of these could be used year round but unfortunately, their weak construction especially the gazebo looking one wouldn't fair in highwinds.
Snow on the other hand wouldn't bother them as the heaters running would heat the unit causing the snow to melt.

There are ways to build an awesome green house using PVC pipes and Some plastic that can withstand the elements.
One could modify the green houses to be a bit more resilient by adding some some PVC to each of of the 8 poles.

Green houses need to be vented from time to time and need a fan to circulate the air.
Some people have used air conditioning units to cool them on super hot days .

One can also grow things in doors if one can not use a greenhouse.

but you will need some pretty bright Daylight type LEDS or CFLs.

In winter you would need artificial lighting as well in the greenhouse.

NIce post. Good information. Thanks.

Only thing I have a problem with is the heater. I am off the grid and that heater is out of the question. I will need to use either solar, wood or propane heating for my greenhouse. I hope to use mostly passive solar heating backed by wood heat or propane next winter for my greenhouse.

I see that. I cannot figure out why the images are bad. I will try to see if he can upload them again, if he still has them.
